Preface

At the beginning of April 2020, the Ministry of Education officially announced the transformation of Yinxing Hospitality Management College of Chengdu University of Information Technology (CUIT) into Gingko College of Hospitality Management (JFH [2020] No. 15). Since then, the college became the first and only independent higher institute in Hospitality Management in Chinese mainland, making it a significant milestone in the history.

A Cloud Ceremony on the 18th Anniversary of Gingko

On April 22, 2020, Gingko College of Hospitality and Management (Gingko) celebrated its 18th anniversary online and inaugurated a live streaming ceremony entitled "The New Journey of Gingko " through Tiktok, one of the most popular social media worldwide. The event was launched at the square in front of the college library. Mr. Tian Tao, the Trustee of China Gingko Education Group, Mr Li Ming, the President of the College and the senior management of the College, presented the event on site. Due to the epidemic prevention and control, about 14,000 audiences participated online, including teaching faculty and administrative team, representatives of strategic partners and guests, students and alumni.

Mr. Li Ming, President of the College, reviewed how the College followed the principles of the national educational reform, by continuously exploring and improving the mechanism and system. President Li ingeminated the philosophy and mission, highlighting the shared vision of the college, declaring the school mission and clarifying the new journey of Gingko College after the transfer.
On behalf of the teaching faculty, Ms. Zhang Qianqian, Lecturer of the Department of Hotel Management, expressed her gratitude and warm congratulations to the 18th anniversary of Gingko College and the independence. She recalled her own growth with the college, demonstrated her pride as a "Gingkoer" and conveyed her commitment to teaching.

Mr. Tian Tao, delivered a speech on behalf of the founding company. He firstly congratulated on the successful transfer of the Gingko College and expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed or supported the development of the Gingko College, with a further aspiration to build Gingko College into a first-class higher educational institute offering undergraduate programs in the domain of hospitality management in China‘s mainland and an worldwide- renowned education provider with teaching and research excellency as well as social responsibilities.

Warm congratulations were received from all directions, including SHTM+Hotel ICON Consultancy Team of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, expert of Cornel’s Statler Hotel, Senior Management of Swiss Education Group (SEG) and Chiang Mai University (CMU, Thailand), General Managers of international and national hotels (e.g. The Ritz-Carlton, The Temple House, JW Marriot, BTG Homeinns etc.) as well as senior management from renowned independent and boutique hotels in Chengdu (e.g. Tibet Hotel, Jinhe Hotel).

Mr. John Daly, Director of Quality Assurance of the SEG and Deputy Chair on Board of Directors of THE-ICE, also sent warm greetings from Switzerland.

On behalf of Chiang Mai University, Mr. Chaphiporn Kiatkachatharn, Advisor to the President of CMU and the Awardee of the 2018’s Chinese Government Friendship Award, conveyed his warm congratulations from Thailand.

Internationalization

Initiating the Consecutive MBA Program in Hospitality and Tourism Jointly Conducted by Gingko. C & PSU

On the morning of June 10, 2020, the Consecutive MBA Program in Hospitality and Tourism jointly conducted by Gingko College and the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism (FHT) of Prince Songkla University (Thailand) was initiated. A webinar was hosted by Dr. Fu Jing, Vice President of Gingko and featured by Dr. Pornprsanu Promsivapallop and Dr. Chayanon Phucharoen, respectively the Dean and Deputy Dean of FHT. Students and teachers from eight departments of Gingko participated online.

The consecutive MBA program in Hospitality and Tourism between the two universities is Gingko's first-ever postgraduate program carried out in partnership with high-quality oversea universities. Faculties from both China and Thailand will work together on collaborative teaching and research, making full use of information technology and blended teaching approach to prepare international and research talents in the field of hospitality and tourism management for the Sichuan-ASEAN region.

Dr. Pornprsanu Promsivapallop, the Dean of FHT, proceeded with a presentation on the PSU Phuket Campus and FHT. He emphasized on the unique strengths for tourism and hospitality education and research inherent in the geographical advantages of both Sichuan and Phuket and expressed great confidence in jointly fostering excellence in this field. Deputy Dean Dr. Chayanon Phucharoen then provided a detailed overview of the features of the MBA program to the audiences including the internationalized course structure, strong teaching faculty and close relationship with public and private sectors in the country and abroad.

The cooperation between Gingko and PSU is another exploration for Gingko to collaborate with reputable oversea universities in the field of hospitality and tourism, opening a new chapter in joint teaching and research endeavors. Furthermore, the partnership demonstrates Gingko’s developmental strategies of its global engagement particularly in Southeast Asia, an important region for Belt & Road Initiatives.

Dr. Fu Jing gave a short briefing on the signing of the university-level Memorandum of Understanding and school-level Memorandum of Agreement held at the PSU Phuket Campus last Novermber.

A New Chapter for 
Gingko’s Internationalization

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the signing ceremony was held within their respective campuses via video conference online platform. Assoc. Prof. Li Ming, the President of Gingko and, Prof. Niwes Nantachit, the President of CMU, as well as the management team of the two universities attended the ceremony.
The ceremony officially commenced with speech delivered by the two Presidents. Prof. Niwes firstly expressed his greetings in Chinese. He introduced that CMU is one of the oldest universities in Thailand with extensive resources in education and research, followed further by an explanation on the mission of CMU and stated a sincere wish of promoting teacher-student exchanges as well as teaching and research collaborations between the two universities in the fields of hospitality, tourism, healthcare, international logistics and e-commerce.

In addition, President Niwes also spoke highly of the time-honored friendship between Thailand and China and showed full confidence in the cooperation of cross- and inter-disciplinary programs between Thai and Chinese universities under the "Belt and Road" initiatives.

Thereafter, President Li Ming commended Chiang Mai University for its outstanding teaching and research achievements that helped bolstering regional development over the past 50 years. He introduced Gingko College, which is renowned as the only independent higher educational institute of its kind in Chinese mainland for its professionalism in hospitality field and the innovative teaching mode to be conducted in its three world-class teaching hotels. President Li Ming expressed the wish for Gingko to collaborate with Chiang Mai University in the fields of smart hotel, digital innovation, fin-tech for the tourism and hotel industry, supply chain management for the tourism and hospitality industry, wellness tourism, cross-border e-commerce etc., so as to jointly foster international talents for management and research roles.

Afterwards, President Li Ming and President Niwes signed an MOU. The whole process was also witnessed and supported by Ms. Woramon Sinsuwan, the Acting Consul General of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chengdu.

Youth never ends

In the year of 2020, the pandemic made commencement and farewell parties impossible. No group photos with classmates, no hugs with teachers. Commencement for 2020’s Gingkoers, turns to be unusual and unforgettable.
As President Li Ming mentioned in his speech, “2020 is a tough year, which made this graduation season so special and so unforgettable in our lives. Wherever you go, please remember that Gingko is your home and you are all welcome to come back. I sincerely wish all of you a bright future.”

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, Chengdu Gingko College of Hospitality Management, together with international and national hotel groups, organized a series of webinars known as ‘Voice of Gingko’. The webinars aim to analyze the vulnerability of service industry from both academic and professional perspectives, reflecting how service industry faces challenges and overcomes difficulties. The Voice of Gingko would like to take this opportunity to call for more attentions and supports to the service industry through experience sharing and knowledge transfer.

On April 23rd, Ms. Cici Zhao, Lecturer of the Department of Hotel Management of Gingko, had an in-depth interview with Mr. Marcel Damen, the General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Chengdu. The discussed topics such as market changes and challenges, hotels’ responses and best practices etc. provided real-life cases and valuable experiences for teaching and research which on the other hand, enlightened students and helped them with their career planning.

On June 24, 2020, the Vice President Dr. Fu Jing was invited to give a keynote speech on a webinar entitled "Food Safety in Hospitality Post COVID-19", which was hosted by the Institute of Hospitality, The United Kingdom.

The topic of that Dr. Fu shared with the attendees is ‘COVID-19 Best Practices and Lessons Learned for Hotels in Western China’. Through in-depth interviews and continuous observations of international hotels and real estate groups such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson, Swire, etc., Dr. Fu introduced the impact of COVID-19 on the hospitality industry in Western China and analyzed best practices and lessons learned from the survey. Concerning the talent preparations for hospitality industry, Dr. Fu adopted the case of Gingko’s three world-class teaching hotels in Nanxi campus, elaborated how the college responds to the changing global market and consumer demand by innovating and improving teaching, training and research in the post-epidemic era.
The presentation particularly the reflections of utilizing teaching hotels in Nanxi Campus to prepare the next generation of hospitality professionals in the post-epidemic era was well-received by the attendees.
