“Gingko Internationalization”

 Anniversary Review

In April 2020, Gingko College of Hospitality Management was successfully transformed into the first independently established higher education institute  featuring hospitality management in China. The college has set the standards in learning from top-ranking international and domestic colleges of hotel and tourism management. A cutting-edge development strategy will gradually improve the college's international competitiveness and enhance the global competency of its teachers and students. The Global Engagement Center (GE Center), an administrative department of the college, is leading the implementation of this strategy.
Over the past year, aided by the joint efforts of the whole institute, Ginkgo College's internationalization project has achieved milestones in strategic layout, branding, teaching, and research.

Based on the Internationalization Quality Review Process (IQRP) jointly developed by the World Economic Cooperation and the International Academic Cooperation Committee, Gingko College has formulated a ten-year, three-step Internationalization Strategy Framework, the first of its kind in China. In just three months, the GE Center has implemented an internationalization index throughout the college. The Center has organized a total of 24 thematic seminars across various functional departments and teaching units; listened to suggestions; improved existing frameworks; and coordinated various departments to promote the internationalization process step by step. In collaboration with teaching units and the Student Affairs Department, the GE Center has also promoted and popularized internationalization awareness among students and faculty members, and organized 12 internationalization-themed seminars with a total of more than 2,500 student and faculty participants.

Teaching and Research

The College has updated bilingual courses and encouraged the faculty team to develop new featured classes; met benchmarking standards set by top international universities; standardized the design of English materials for core professional courses; and steadily realized smoother mapping between core courses and international ones, including in hotel and tourism management, marketing, and human resources. The contents of internationally-focused professional courses will lay a good foundation for mutual recognition of international credits and joint teaching.

Together with the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a team of hotel consultants, and a group of experts from the Statler Teaching Hotel at Cornell University, Gingko College has developed a practical curriculum for the Yibin Campus Teaching Hotel that is based on both theoretical principles and practical professional skills.

GINGKO ACTION

The College has cooperated with high-quality universities, including the National Institute of Development Administration, Chiang Mai University, Prince of Songkla University and Dusit Thani College. The College also launched the Global Destinations Study Plan (GDSP) this year, which continues to open up the channels for teachers and students to upgrade their academic qualifications through a top-up program including joint training for undergraduates and doctoral students. As of now a total of 34 teachers and students have participated in the international academic upgrading program. Of these, two teachers have been accepted as doctoral students by internationally-recognized universities;2 teachers have passed the written examinations for doctoral students at internationally-recognized universities; and 11 teachers have been accepted and jointly trained as graduate students at internationally-recognized universities.

Faculty and students are encouraged to attend mainstream international academic conferences in the field of hospitality and tourism, apply for international research projects, and participate in and lead international joint research projects. Over the past year, the College's research team has been invited to give keynote speeches at the Global Tourism Summit (Buzz China), the Global Forum of the British Hospitality Research Institute, the Academic Webinar of the Tourism Sub-Alliance of the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR), and keynote speeches at international first-class academic conferences such as the Asia Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE), the Global Marketing Conference (GMC), and the World Travel Research Conference. Gingko College has opened a new chapter of action in international academic and industry conferences.

As part of its international brand, Gingko College has designed and produced the bilingual electronic quarterly magazine "Gingko Action". Ten issues of the quarterly magazine, as well as two yearbooks from 2020 to 2021, have been published; Gingko College also repositioned and designed a new internationally-focused official WeChat account for the Global Engagement Center. Since the rebranding on July 14, 2020, this account has published 114 articles and increased its follower count by 256%. It has become an important platform for Gingko teachers and students to learn about international hotels and new initiatives in tourism education and research, and for the outside world to learn about the achievements of Ginkgo College's teaching and research.

GINGKO ACTION

In addition, in order to deepen mutual understanding between Gingko College and other cooperating enterprises, attract industry to support the activities of teachers and students, and promote the integration of disciplines, the College created the Gingko- Industry Partnership Scheme (GIP) in April 2021. In the past two months, the GIP series has attracted more than 200 teachers and students from the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Hotel Management, the Department of Financial Management, and the Department of Art and Design to go to ten international/domestic famous hotels such as the Hotel Chengdu, the Temple House, the Hilton Hotel, and the Chengdu Shangri-La Hotel to conduct field visits, project communications, cooperation negotiations and in-depth exchanges with the industry.

GINGKO ACTION

The process of internationalization has a long way to go, and it is necessary to adapt to the local situation and pay attention to ongoing global developments. We must carry forward the traditional characteristics of China while absorbing international experience. Gingko College's internationalization work will take advantage of the new market as well as new demands, new consumption patterns and new technology in the development of the modern service industry as an opportunity to join hands with all teaching units and functional departments to actively broaden the service fields, update service concepts, innovate service standards and lead service education. We will cultivate innovative talents with international standards, Chinese characteristics and Sichuan for the modern service industry in Sichuan and western China more broadly.

It is worth mentioning that the Gingko College faculty team participated in a joint research project conducted with Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) and undertook a research project entitlted "The Current Situation and Future of Chinese Tourists' Outbound Travel in the Post-Epidemic Era". The team completed the research design, data collection and analysis, and report and translation. The research process was a breakthrough in the participation and hosting of international research projects in this field by a private institute. The project has both trained the research team and enhanced the international visibility and reputation of the institute.

On April 21, 2021, Dr. Hayakawa Taki, a scholar from Japan, was invited to give a lecture. Dr. Hayakawa shared his experiences in cross-cultural travel with Ginkgo students and faculty. Dr. Hayakawa talked about how to appreciate and discover beauty from the perspective of tourism culture and life aesthetics. He suggested that students of tourism-related majors should not only have the ability to appreciate and discover "beauty", but also learn to guide others to appreciate and discover beauty for themselves.

Sensory Journey with Japanese Scholar -
 "Beautiful Japan, Beautiful Mount Fuji:
How Do We Appreciate Beauty?"

Dr. Hayakawa shared with the students and faculty a concept that Tsuneo Kosano (1940-) of Kawaguchiko Town in Yamanashi Prefecture advocated and practiced successfully, using the "five senses experience" strategy in the tourism industry as an example. Dr. Hayakawa concluded by quoting two lines from Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming to illustrate the importance of the "five senses experience":

When you do not look at a flower, the flower returns to silence with your mind.
When you look at a flower, the color of the flower becomes clear and you know that the flower is already in your mind.

Dr. Hayakawa introduced his hometown Yamanashi Prefecture to the students and faculty and shared the origins of Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture and Narita City.

In the afternoon, four groups of students from the Department of Hotel Management and the Department of Art and Design conducted a roadshow for four hotel brands of Rujia: Aicha, Park Lane, Hoyi and Pu Yin. Under the guidance of teachers, students from both departments used their knowledge and skills in different fields such as brand positioning, hotel operation and management, marketing, art design, color matching, media technology and language expression to creatively interpret the connotations and extensions of different hotel brands. The excellent performance of the students won the unanimous approval of the guests and a special award from BTG Homeinns Hotels (Group).

This activity not only enhanced the students' comprehensive abilities in information collection and analysis, marketing planning and execution, and team work and collaboration, but also pushed them learn and understand more about the "home" cultural service concept of Shougang Rujia Hotel Group.
