Tips for supporting adolescents in building resilience

「每个人都在学习如何成功,却没有人能保证自己一定可以成功,但失败却是走向成功的必经之路」

Everyone is learning how to succeed, but no one can guarantee their own success. However, failure is the inevitable path to success.

人的一生都在学习成长,过程中难免会面对各种挑战;成功经验能让人能学习肯定自我,失败经验则可能带来挫折感。青少年若未能学会有效处理挫折感所带来的负面情绪,可能会不利于自我认同发展、生活满意度,甚至对心理健康造成重大影响。因此,作为家长,我们应该思考如何协助青少年建立面对挫折的合宜态度,培养面对人生逆境时的心理韧性,并进一步学习因应挫折的技能。
Throughout life, individuals are in a continuous process of learning and growth, encountering various challenges along their journey. Successful experiences serve as affirmations of one's capabilities, while facing failures may lead to feelings of frustration. If adolescents struggle to effectively manage the negative emotions that arise from these challenges, it can have a detrimental impact on their self-identity development, overall life satisfaction, and significantly affect their mental well-being. As parents, it is crucial to consider how to support adolescents in developing a positive mindset when confronting obstacles, fostering resilience in the face of life's trials, and acquiring additional skills to cope with frustration.

「心理韧性是指一个人能从负面经验卷土重来的能力」

Resilience is the capacity of an individual to come back from negative experiences.

心理韧性是指在面对压力、挑战或错误时,一个人具备足够面对和因应这些逆境的能力。评估一个人是否拥有足够的心理韧性,并非是看个人是否容易受到挫折的影响,或要求他永远表现得非常「坚强」或「勇敢」,而认为任何与坚强或勇敢相反的状态都被视为懦弱。实际上,心理韧性是指个人具备一种心理素质,这种素质使他们能够在适度的伤害、错误、挑战、压力或挫折中「成长」,并相信自己能从逆境中获益,进一步发展自身应对挑战的能力。
Resilience is the ability of an individual to face and cope with adversity when confronted with stress, challenges, or mistakes. Evaluating whether a person has sufficient resilience is not about whether they are easily affected by setbacks or requiring them to always appear very "strong" or "brave." It involves having a mindset that enables individuals to "grow" amid moderate harm, mistakes, challenges, stress, or setbacks. It's the belief that one can derive benefits from adversity, enhancing their aptitude to cope with life's challenges

A. 体验日常生活的挫折经验有其必要性
Experiencing frustrations in daily life is necessary.
家长应该避免试图帮青少年解决问题;举例来说,当青少年说参加校队却被拒绝时,应避免出面帮他们争取机会,这会使他们失去学习独自面对挫折经验的机会。家长应该理解,面对生活逆境,都是让其学习为自身行为负责,并且培养其独立的机会。
Parents should avoid trying to solve problems for their adolescents. For example, when an adolescent is rejected from joining a school team, parents should refrain from intervening to secure an opportunity for them. This allows them to learn to face life adversities, taking responsibility for their actions and fostering independence.
B. 接纳负面情绪并思考因对逆境的方法
Accepting negative emotions and thinking about ways to deal with adversity.
当青少年面对挫折经验时,家长首先应该要做的是,鼓励他们表达这个经验所带来的感受,而非只是一昧得安慰他,或是试图想要消除青少年的情绪。当消化完情绪之后,再陪伴其思考并发掘自身具备的优势来应对生活挑战。这不仅能让青少年用更健康的态度去面对自身情绪,也能帮助其发展解决问题的能力。
When adolescents face frustrations, the first thing parents should do is encourage them to acknowledge and express the feelings from the experience, rather than simply consoling them or attempting to eliminate their emotions. After processing these emotions, parents can then help adolescents think about and discover their own strengths to cope with life challenges. This not only enables adolescents to face their emotions with a healthier attitude but also helps them develop problem-solving skills.

C. 经历失败经验并不代表自己是没有价值的
Experiencing failure does not mean one is worthless.
在辅导历程中,我们常会引导学生培养「问题外化」的能力,意即「问题的本身才是问题,人是没有问题的」,我们帮助他们学习讨论「事件」成果,并且不用行为成败来定义自我价值,让其知道每个人生经验都是个学习成长的机会。
In the school counseling process, counselors often guide adolescents to develop the ability to "externalize problems," meaning "the problem itself is the problem, not the person." We help students discuss the outcomes of events without defining their self-worth based on success or failure, letting them know that every life experience is an opportunity for learning and growth.
D. 学习用成长型思维来解读人生逆境
Learning to interpret life adversities with a growth mindset.
成长型思维是指个人愿意相信通过「付出努力」及「良好策略」能使自己进步,经常运用成长型思维的个体会把失败与挫折当作是学习的好机会,而且在遭遇逆境时,他会把专注焦点放在寻找解决方案,而非是陷在负向情绪的漩涡。
A growth mindset is when an individual is willing to believe that through "effort" and "good strategies," they can improve. Individuals who frequently apply a growth mindset view failure and setbacks as opportunities for learning. When facing adversity, their focus is on finding solutions rather than getting stuck in the negative emotions.

寄宿夜

本月我们举办了宿舍之夜,孩子们沉浸在书海中,享受阅读的愉悦;火锅的香气飘散在整个宿舍,大家围坐一堂,共度美好时光;歌声在夜空中荡漾,唤起了欢笑和共鸣。
This month, we organized LINC Night, where the children immersed themselves in a sea of books, relishing the joy of reading. The enticing aroma of hot pot wafted through the entire dormitory as everyone gathered around, sharing delightful moments. The night echoed with the tunes of songs in the air, eliciting laughter and resonance.

The Art of Communication
沟通的艺术课程

这个月我们以"The Art of Communication"为主题开展了一系列活动,希望同学们能够深入了解沟通的魅力。有效的沟通能够帮助你们更高效地传达自己的想法并获得答案。
This month, we kicked off with "The Art of Communication," aiming for students to understand the charm of effective communication. Efficient communication can help convey your thoughts more effectively and yield better answers.

本周三晚,我们成功举办了本月的CWA Talk,探讨了“公益项目如何解决社会问题”这一主题。
我们邀请到了“津派手工钩编技艺”非遗项目的传承人、”潮汐“公益组织的创始人关老师。她分享了“潮汐计划”从帮助50个“瓷娃娃”学员到协助500名面临困境的女性,再到超过8万人次的培训参与者的创业故事。
关老师通过自己的创业经历向学生们生动展示了在困境中寻找解决方案的过程,并提供了许多关于开展CAS活动的实用建议。学生们的积极提问涵盖了“如何募集资金”、“如何帮助不识字残疾人学会编织工艺”等方面。我们相信这次活动让同学们对公益和项目实践有了更深刻的理解。

This Wednesday evening, we hosted this month's CWA Talk, focusing on the theme: "How to use public welfare projects to address practical issues in our surroundings?."
We had the privilege of welcoming Ms. Guan, the inheritor of the "Tianjin-style Hand-hooked Weaving" Intangible Cultural Heritage project and the founder of the "Tide" charity organization. Ms. Guan shared insights into the entrepreneurial journey using the "Tide Plan" as an example, detailing the progression from assisting 50 "Glass Dolls" students to helping 500 women in challenging situations, and eventually reaching over 80,000 training participants.
Through her practical entrepreneurial case study, Ms. Guan vividly demonstrated to the students how to navigate challenges by seeking diverse solutions. She provided valuable advice on engaging in CAS activities. Students were highly engaged during the Q&A session, posing questions like "How to raise funds" and "How to help illiterate individuals with disabilities learn the weaving craft." We believe that this event deepened students' understanding and awareness of philanthropy and project implementation.

Weekend Boarding
周末寄宿

龙殿坐落于虞山北麓,初建于北宋。1995年进行了修缮,殿内保存了一棵拥有1000多年历史的古银杏树,被誉为"龙树",树荫独特。
然而,同学们在访问时发现龙殿正值封闭期,未能亲睹这棵古老的银杏树。尽管如此,他们仍有幸发现了龙殿旁边的龙潭,也别具风采。这段经历提醒我们,人生之路处处皆有风景,只要我们用一双善于发现美的眼睛。

The Dragon Temple is located at the northern foothills of Mount Yu, originally built during the Northern Song Dynasty. It underwent renovation in 1995 and houses an ancient ginkgo tree with a history of over 1000 years inside the temple, acclaimed as the "Dragon Tree" for its unique and sprawling shade.
However, when the students visited, they found that the Dragon Temple was in a closed period, and they couldn't witness this ancient ginkgo tree. 
Nevertheless, they were fortunate to discover the nearby Dragon Pond, which also held its own beauty. This experience serves as a reminder that the journey of life is filled with scenery, as long as we have a pair of eyes that appreciate beauty.

本月我们还举办了丰富多彩的体育活动,涵盖了飞盘、篮球、羽毛球、健身和舞蹈等多个项目。在世华,我们非常重视体育,通过这些活动,我们期望学生不仅能够享受运动的乐趣,还能够培养团队协作意识、锻炼身体素质。

This month, we also organized a diverse range of sports activities, covering various projects such as frisbee, basketball, badminton, fitness, and dance. At CWA, we highly value sports, and through these activities, we hope that students can not only enjoy the pleasure of physical exercise but also cultivate a sense of teamwork and enhance physical fitness.

CASA社团第五次尝试发射火箭,事后还对本次试发写了小结。
The CASA club made its fifth attempt to launch a rocket, and afterward, they also wrote a summary of this trial launch.

火箭CASA第五次发射,这次测试远远超出了预期,为未来的发射任务积累了宝贵的数据。正如爱迪生说过“我没有失败,我只是发现了一万种行不通的方案”。
The fifth launch of the Rocket CASA far exceeded expectations in this test, accumulating valuable data for future launch missions.In the upcoming tests, we believe you will encounter many challenges, hoping you'll face them with increasing courage and resilience. As Thomas Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work“.

我们举办了NAQT(National Academic Quiz Tournaments)的示范比赛。活动为参与者提供了一个预演比赛格式和风格的机会。这次活动不仅为学生提供了宝贵的学习经验,也在参与者中建立了团队合作的意识。This month, we organized a demo competition for NAQT. The event provided students with an opportunity to preview the competition format and style. The demo competition not only offered valuable learning experiences but also fostered a sense of teamwork among the participants.

New Space A107 for DP2 Only
DP2的专属空间

本月我们为DP2学生开放了A107,供晚自习使用。使用时间为晚上5:00至09:30,房间内配备沙发、桌椅、白板和饮水机。希望在这个紧张的复习期间,学生们能够有一个更为舒适、专属的地方进行自习。
We opened room A107 exclusively for DP2 students for evening self-study. The designated hours are from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The room is equipped with sofas, desks, a whiteboard, and a water dispenser. We hope that during this intense revision period, students can have a more comfortable and dedicated space for self-study.

通向成功的旅程从不是一条平坦的道路,其中充满各种波折。成功的关键在于即使失败跌倒,最终也愿意尝试重新站起来,克服困境,继续勇往直前。
The path to success is never smooth; it's marked by twists and turns. Success hinges on the willingness to try, stand up after setbacks, and persist even in the face of failure.
