Reflecting
Jinan

Five books
continue the story
of Old Jinan

By Reporter Ren Xiaofei

In the past two years, with the popularity of Chaoran Building and the "woven koi" of Baotu Spring, Jinan has become a popular city on social platforms. Qushuiting Street, the old commercial port, Jiaoji Railway Museum, Hongjialou Church, Fuxue Confucian Temple, Yujiaqiao, Houzaimen Street, Gulubazi Street, Xiaoguanghan Cinema... Netizens have sorted out the "check-in spots" of different styles in Jinan, including ancient courtyards, "county literature" style, industrial retro style, European style, natural scenery, etc. The beauty of different postures of Jinan, a famous historical and cultural city, has been gradually excavated. Many netizens lamented that "Lao She is still too subtle."

Recently, a unique "Reflecting Jinan - Historical Image Document Exhibition" was held at 579 Baigongji Store of Qianmo Bookstore which is the Most Beautiful Bookstore in China. The exhibition content is based on books on Jinan culture published by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House in recent years, combined with precious collections of well-known collectors, including old photos of Jinan, old maps, old trademarks, rare historical documents, etc., allowing the audience to feel the cultural heritage and historical changes of Jinan through old papers and old images.

On July 27, after a situational drama "Lao She and Jinan", Qianmo Bookstore welcomed the five authors of "South of the Jishui River", "Searching for Traditional Villages in Jinan", "Jinan City Chronicles", "Mirror Image of Jinan Prefecture" and "All the Way" - Niu Guodong, Jiang Bo, Yong Jian, Zhao Xiaolin and Chen Yuzhou. These five people used five books to connect the scattered historical fragments, illuminating the history and culture of Jinan between the pages.

As early as 2003, Niu Guodong, an expert on Jinan history and culture, published "Jinan Hu", which became the first graphic and textual monograph on urban human geography based on neighborhood culture in the history of Jinan. Ten years later, "Jinan Hu" was updated and renamed "South of Jishui". In the following more than ten years, "South of Jishui" continued to sell well and became the best choice for "knowing Jinan".

In the book, Niu Guodong takes walking among ancient cities as the main line, starting from Chengziya, the earliest home of Jinan, passing through the streets and alleys of the city, extending to the four directions of Guanxiang, wandering in the longitude and latitude of the commercial port, and stopping at the ancient town of Luokou on the bank of the Yellow River (the old course of Ji River)... He talks with the ancestors, tells the present people, records what he sees, hears and feels, and tries to restore the dusty history, connects endless anecdotes, and talks with readers about the endless vicissitudes of this ancient city south of Jishui.

Yong Jian, a journalist, wrote a book called "Jinan City Chronicles" from the perspective of Jinan's urban changes through the eyes of a journalist. As an expert journalist, Yong Jian's "Jinan City Chronicles" released in 2017 is also known as Jinan's history of urban demolition. With delicate brushstrokes and rich pictures, he reproduced the historical features and human stories of representative streets (areas) such as Quancheng Road, Gaodusi Lane, and Jiujunmen Lane. After 7 years, Yong Jian was pleasantly surprised to see the reprint of "Jinan City Chronicles".

Zhao Xiaolin is also a Jinan cultural and historical expert who started out as a journalist, and a famous "collector" in Jinan. In his book "Mirror Image of Jinan City", Zhao Xiaolin uses 200 old photos from the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China to comprehensively introduce the various aspects and angles of Jinan a hundred years ago. Through nine parts such as "Remnants of the Late Qing Dynasty", "Mountain Scenery in a City", and "Springs and Elegant Scenery", he shows a little-known and vivid old Jinan.

As a professor at Shandong Jianzhu University, Jiang Bo witnessed the changes of the city as a scholar. He participated in many important changes in the city's appearance and his footprints were all over the city and outside the city. The book "Searching for Traditional Villages in Jinan" is a set of Jinan Traditional Villages Atlas that he completed after years of field research and visits to a large number of traditional villages. The book lists dozens of ancient villages in detail, focusing on the historical culture, spatial pattern, architectural characteristics, intangible cultural heritage, etc. of each village from different angles and perspectives such as architecture, history, and folklore, and systematically and comprehensively presents the style of these traditional villages.

The city is growing rapidly, and its history needs to be recorded. The most affectionate confession to a city is to write a love letter to it. These five books are the love letters jointly presented by these five cultural scholars to Jinan.

In 1904, with the opening of the Jiaoji Railway and the opening of Jinan as a commercial port, the ancient city of Jinan began its transformation into a new modern city. The Jiaoji Railway is not only the first railway in Shandong, but also the heart of modern Chinese history. This year marks the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Jiaoji Railway and the 120th anniversary of Jinan's opening as a commercial port. Chen Yuzhou, deputy director of the Jiaoji Railway Museum, brought the book "All the Way: Source Code of Jiaoji Railway" which took ten years to create from the perspective of a railway man. In the book, Chen Yuzhou uses rigorous narrative and vivid language to show readers the somewhat boring historical materials hidden in the pile of old papers one by one, allowing readers to feel the historical charm of the Jiaoji Railway for 120 years.
