Supply Chain Empowers ROCKWOOL China's 2024 Voyage
United in Effort, rEFORMATION GROWTH
As human living standards improve, the demand for fresh food and other items requiring low-temperature storage has increased, leading to rapid development in cold chain construction. Taking the year 2020 as an example, despite the severe impact of the pandemic on economic development, there were 68 cold chain logistics companies that initiated dozens of investment and financing activities due to development needs. Among the 26 publicly disclosed, 18 cases exceeded 100 million yuan, and a staggering 5 cases surpassed 1 billion yuan, indicating the rapid growth momentum of the cold chain industry.
Such rapid development inevitably brings many issues that need to be addressed. The most significant aspect of the cold chain industry's growth is the construction of cold chain buildings. Common concerns include frequent fire safety incidents, non-durable insulation performance, frequent maintenance and high costs associated with cold storage facilities.
Among these issues, the consequences of fire accidents involving thermal insulation materials are particularly alarming. In fact, cold storage fires have never ceased in recent years. On November 16, 2014, a short circuit in the wiring at Longyuan Food Co., Ltd. in Peijialing Village, Hualong Town, Shouguang City, Shandong Province, ignited the polyurethane foam insulation material on the wall, resulting in 18 fatalities. On November 18, 2017, a tragic accident occurred in a cold storage facility in Xihongmen Town, Daxing District, Beijing, during equipment testing, which unfortunately ignited the polyurethane insulation material, causing 19 deaths. On June 1, 2018, a fire broke out in the cold storage of the "Hao Yixin Trade City" agricultural and sideline products comprehensive market in Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, which took 60 hours and a large number of firefighters to extinguish. On December 31, 2021, a fire accident occurred in the underground second-floor cold storage of Xinchangxing Market in Dalian City due to the illegal use of polyurethane insulation materials, resulting in 8 deaths and one firefighter dying in the line of duty. On June 9, 2022, four people died, and two firefighters sacrificed their lives when welding sparks ignited the insulation material during the repair of a fire pipeline at Hangzhou Ice and Snow World. On March 27, 2023, a fire occurred during the demolition of an abandoned cold storage in Dongcun, Cui Erzhuang Town, Cang County, Hebei Province, causing 11 deaths.
It is not difficult to see from the above fire incidents that one common feature is that the materials burning in these accidents were all some type of foam insulation material. The main reasons for the problems can be summarized as follows:
Industry dynamics
Cold Chain Building Fire Safety Considerations
Industry dynamics
Globally, countries around the world have corresponding research on materials used for thermal insulation in cold chain buildings, focusing on safety, environmental protection, energy saving, and green sustainable development. If only the thermal insulation performance of the cold chain building envelope is considered, foam polyurethane and vacuum insulation panels both have low thermal conductivity coefficients. However, when considering the safety, energy saving, and environmental factors of the envelope structure, some inorganic fiber insulation materials (such as stone wool) can also provide excellent performance and value. For example, although the thermal conductivity coefficient of stone wool is higher than some organic materials, high-quality stone wool has minimal decay over its entire lifecycle and high dimensional stability. This can reduce the energy consumption during the operation phase of cold chain buildings while significantly reducing the frequency and costs of maintenance and repairs of the insulation materials.
Currently, the development of domestic cold chain buildings faces significant challenges in fire safety. Issues such as unreasonable material design and selection, a chaotic market, frequent use of counterfeit and substandard materials due to low-price bidding, and a general lack of safety awareness among installers continue to plague the industry's development. In fact, by utilizing the safety advantages of inorganic insulation materials, many of the current industry issues can be resolved. This requires the concerted efforts of researchers, industry management departments, and correct handling of problems. The development of technology and materials is endless.
2023 McFarlane Sunview Cold Storage Fire in the U.S.
- Due to the high requirements for thermal insulation, the design and construction of cold chain buildings often choose combustible and flammable foam insulation materials. The interior walls are vertical and continuous, and the foam insulation materials create a chimney effect during a fire, resulting in fierce burning and extremely rapid spread of the flames.
- Because of the lack of air inside the cold storage, there is often a large amount of incomplete combustion of the foam insulation materials after ignition, releasing a significant amount of toxic gases, which is one of the main factors causing severe casualties.
- The cold storage is in a low-temperature environment, and the foam insulation materials used have a longer initial smouldering time and concealed burning, leading to an extended initial phase of the fire, making it difficult to detect from the outside. By the time it is discovered, it is often too late.

Building a Strong Fire Barrier,
Safeguarding Life Safety
The recent spate of building fires in places such as Xinyu in Jiangxi and Nanjing has resulted in extremely significant casualties and property losses. The shocking images of these fires represent irreparable pain for the affected families. Fire is merciless, and life is priceless. The alarm bell for fire safety must toll continuously, and the urgency of building fire safety cannot be overstated.
Using reliable fireproof materials in construction, implementing effective fire prevention structures and facilities, and strengthening daily fire management can effectively prevent the hazards of fires. Selecting non-combustible building materials is key to enhancing a building's fire performance; it directly affects how quickly and extensively a fire spreads within a building. The use of non-combustible building materials can effectively slow down the spread of fire, reducing the risk of a localized fire escalating into a full-blown conflagration, particularly minimizing casualties caused by toxic smoke, and buying precious time for evacuation and firefighting efforts.
Building insulation materials are now widely used in new construction and the renovation of old residential areas, significantly improving energy efficiency and living comfort. However, it is crucial not to overlook that many flammable materials are still used in construction projects. These materials release a large amount of heat and toxic smoke during a fire, intensifying the burning, damaging the structure, and endangering people's lives.
Choosing insulation materials with excellent fire resistance is a key measure in building fire protection. National standards strictly categorize various building materials based on their fire resistance, and the "Code for Fire Protection in Building Design" also sets clear and strict requirements for different buildings' fire resistance levels, fire prevention measures, and material usage:

Fire Safety: Zero Tolerance for Fakes
Fire safety is a perennial concern, and enhancing fire prevention and emergency response is a focal point in the construction industry. The state has clear fire-resistant requirements for building components. However, many inferior building material products still flood the market. These products not only fail to play a positive role in disaster prevention but also pose a threat to people's lives and property safety.
On March 15, 2024, CCTV's March 15th Evening Gala exposed the chaos in the fire-resistant glass and fire extinguisher industries, revealing the shocking fact that counterfeit and substandard products are rife in the market, seriously threatening fire safety.
Also exposed were fire extinguishers that couldn't put out fires. Some non-standard fire extinguishers, while appearing to meet national standards, had worrying fire-extinguishing effects. According to the national standard GB 4066-2017 for dry chemical fire extinguishing agents, the main ingredient diammonium phosphate should account for 75%, and ammonium sulfate for 15%. However, these non-standard, substandard products failed to meet the required content levels, rendering them ineffective in extinguishing fires and potentially causing the fire to spread due to improper use. Merchants told undercover reporters that it is usually difficult to distinguish between standard-compliant and non-standard products by appearance alone, but there are differences in composition content. The price of qualified products is usually about 30% higher, but there is a noticeable difference in fire protection effect. Merchants described those non-standard products as: "100% unable to put out fires, to tell you the truth, the more you use them, the bigger the fire gets."
The stone wool market for fire-resistant thermal insulation is also mixed with good and bad products. Some products have quality issues in terms of fire resistance and high-temperature resistance, failing to provide effective fire protection. Some manufacturers reduce the ore content in the raw materials and use a large amount of slag to cut costs, leaving these products with hidden dangers in terms of fire resistance, high-temperature resistance, and durability.
ROCKWOOL, as a global leader in fire-resistant thermal insulation stone wool industry, strictly controls product quality at the production end. By efficiently melting natural rocks, our advanced production process ensures that ROCKWOOL' s products can withstand temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius, guaranteeing fire and high-temperature resistance performance.
In terms of product testing and certification, ROCKWOOL adheres to a rigorous and serious, objective, and truthful work philosophy. Our products have passed inspections by several domestic and international authoritative testing institutions and have obtained multiple internationally renowned certification such as FM certifications, Cleanair certifications, and more. At the same time, we also call for strengthened testing management to prevent unscrupulous manufacturers from exploiting loopholes to commit testing fraud. Our domestic testing partners have encountered other manufacturers using high-quality ROCKWOOL product to impersonate their products for inspection to obtain their product qualification certificates.
ROCKWOOL, as a globally leading brand in stone wool industry, enjoys widespread recognition and reputation. There are manufacturers in the market who adopt similar characters in Chinese or "ROCK WOOL" in English to confuse consumers. Please pay attention to discernment.
Investigations have found that some manufacturers, in order to cut costs, pass off ordinary tempered glass as fire-resistant glass, without even performing basic fire-resistant treatments. Fire-resistant markings can be arbitrarily stamped on ordinary glass as long as there is demand. Under high-temperature tests, these fake fire-resistant glasses deformed and cracked in less than 4 minutes, completely failing to meet national standards for fire performance. The danger they pose in real fire conditions is unimaginable. Industry insiders reveal that to obtain qualified inspection reports, these unscrupulous manufacturers prepare expensive, genuine fire-resistant glass to impersonate their own products for inspection, thereby fraudulently obtaining qualification reports and then brazenly selling counterfeit and substandard products.
