Pursue your passions and become a shining light in your world, illuminating every night.

Pursuing Your Passion

Pursuing Your Passion

In his book Ren Jian Cao Mu, Wang Zengqi once said: "We must love something, just as vegetation loves time". Sometimes, life can feel like a glass of plain water, and the unchanging routine of daily life can be suffocating. Is the daily commute and the mundane tasks of daily living all there is to life? If there's one thing that can add color and flavor to our otherwise bland existence, it is the passion we have for something in life.
What is a hobby? It's a source of warmth on those dark days and a beacon of hope that keeps us going through life's lows. Hobbies bring us not just joy, but also nourishment, helping us emerge from our struggles and pains. Pursuing a hobby doesn't mean giving up on our livelihoods; on the contrary, it often leads to greater rewards. With a deep understanding and passion for our pursuits, we work harder, devote more time and energy, and achieve even greater success. Hobbies come in all shapes and sizes, from the exhilaration of standing atop a mountain after a long hike, to the satisfaction of brewing a cup of coffee for ourselves or friends, to the camaraderie of playing basketball with teammates on the court. Hobbies can involve capturing life's fleeting moments through photography, practicing calligraphy in our free time, or organizing and tidying our homes on weekends.
Our passionfor life not only brings us happiness but also continually enriches us, making us more diverse and well-rounded. As they say, when people are doing what they love, they shine. Life is short, and we hope that you can pursue your passions and become a shining light in your world, illuminating every night.

NRF

Releases the 2023 List of Top 100 Retailers
in the United States

NRF, the National Retail Federation, was founded in 1911 and is headquartered in Washington D.C. The organization provides support such as policy advocacy, industry data, information, and training services to promote the development and innovation of the retail industry. It releases the "Top 100 Retailers List" ranking, which evaluates the latest trends and market dynamics in the retail industry and provides useful insights and information for industry professionals.

This year, with few exceptions, the sales performance of the largest 100 retail groups in the US has shown unexpectedly consistent growth at similar rates. Walmart ranks first with $499.65 billion in annual sales revenue, while Amazon ($232.46 billion) and Costco (164.15 billion) rank second and third respectively. It is worth noting that this growth momentum is not limited to the US market alone, but is strong in international markets as well, particularly in the areas of large chain stores and boutique goods, because consumers are willing to pay membership fees for better value-for-money consumption experiences. On the contrary, pharmacies are facing problems such as labor shortages and store closures, resulting in relatively flat performance.
In addition, international companies from countries such as Mexico are accelerating their entry into the US market and plan to expand their business scale in the US. However, this growth trend also brings about some issues, such as an increase in organized retail crime activities. This not only brings huge losses to enterprises, but also causes problems such as fear, threats, and violence to employees and consumers. Although the average loss has slightly decreased, the problem of retail crime is becoming more and more complex and requires joint efforts from all parties to solve it.

The largest retailer in the United States, Walmart, is accelerating its expansion of in-store advertising business to seize market share in the retail media network market. The company's Walmart Connect advertising business team has launched a series of new advertising services, including bringing more brands onto Walmart Connect's advertising platform and providing customized marketing plans. It is reported that this business will be fully launched in the coming weeks.
The Walmart Connect team also plans to launch a brand-new data-driven advertising platform called "Exchange" to help consumer brands better connect with consumers. This platform will use deep learning and natural language processing technology to analyze consumer behavior for targeted advertising at appropriate times.
Walmart's expansion plan comes after rival Amazon's investment in similar businesses. In addition, Walmart has partnered with Adobe to develop a new advertising solution aimed at enhancing the electronic shopping experience for advertising customers. Although Walmart's digital advertising business is still in its infancy, it has become one of the company's important growth strategies. In recent years, Walmart has been increasing its digital advertising investment to compete for internet advertising market share.

Walmart is Accelerating the Expansion of Digital Advertisement Business

Amazon is closing more and more Amazon Go stores. These stores use Amazon's Just Walk Out technology, which uses sensors and intelligent cameras to record what customers take, eliminating the need for customers to wait in checkout queues and automatically credit their purchase amounts as they walk out. However, there are signs that the chain may be ending: Amazon's second store in its headquarters in Seattle suddenly closed. The store opened in August 2018 and still had many customers until the end. The reason of the branch closing is still unclear.
Despite this, Amazon says it will continue to open Amazon Go stores. However, it plans to regularly evaluate and optimize its store portfolio. At the same time, Amazon appears to be focused on selling Just Walk Out technology to third-party retailers. A spokesperson said that now there are more than 50 third-party stores in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom using the technology, and new locations are added every month.
In addition, there are rumors that Amazon is interested in acquiring Ocado, a UK-based online supermarket and pioneer of fully automated robot warehouses. Ocado's services are currently provided to companies such as Kroger (the US) and Casino (France). If established, Amazon and Ocado can create a fully automated supermarket solution. However, these rumors have not been confirmed.

German retailers, including Aldi, Kaufland, Lidl, and REWE Group, have signed the "Anti-Food Waste Agreement," committing to reducing food waste by 50% before 2030. The agreement includes increasing edible items transferred to non-profit organizations and expanding cooperation with food banks.
Aldi will follow the principle of "avoidance-donation-disposal" and train sales staff. Kaufland and Lidl have already implemented measures to reduce waste, such as close cooperation with suppliers, demand-based product management, discounts, raising customer awareness, and donating surplus materials to charitable organizations.

REWE, Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland Among Those to Sign Pact Against Food Waste

German retailer REWE Group has installed a photovoltaic system at its administrative and logistics center in Hünstetten-Ursprung to generate and provide green energy. The photovoltaic system has an output power of 1,377 kWp and will provide electricity to about 10% of the location's energy needs starting in July 2023.
In addition, two combined heat and power plants will provide energy for the site's power supply and operate heating and cooling systems. REWE Group plans to install hundreds of photovoltaic systems on selected properties in the coming years to generate green electricity for self-sufficiency and share cost savings within the group. EHA is responsible for technical planning and implementation and has developed standardized PV systems as intelligent solutions for existing buildings.

On a practical level, Hanshow's Intel technology-based solutions have the added benefit of being relatively easy to implement in a working environment—and can thus bring about dramatic improvements to operational efficiency in a very short time.
Smarter Shelves from Europe to Japan
Hanshow's smart shelf management deployments in Europe and Japan are case in point.
Despite the geographical distance, both of Hanshow's retail customers faced similar challenges: a need to gain greater insight into what was going on in their stores to improve efficiency and boost sales.
The European business, a large supermarket chain with a global footprint, was facing frequent shortages of fresh food in its stores. The main cause of this problem was the inability of employees to identify out-of-stock (OOS) products and take steps to replenish them in a timely fashion.
The Japanese company, a large chain of department stores, was having difficulty identifying the habits and preferences of its shoppers, hampering the business's marketing efforts.
Hanshow implemented a comprehensive AI solution at both companies. In the supermarkets, it used computer vision cameras to take images of fresh food stacks to provide near real-time data on stock. In the department stores, the company implemented a digital shelf solution that encompassed marketing, OOS management, human-product interaction, customer demand analysis, and smart advertising.
The results were dramatic. The supermarkets saw their average OOS duration drop from 2.5 hours to 1.5 hours—a 40% improvement—while also eliminating the need for employees to perform daily manual inspections. The department store chain, for its part, saw an immediate effect on sales: an increase of nearly 20% in sales of active products when single-product recommendations were implemented in digital shelf areas.
The Transformation of Global Retail
The promise of AI in the retail sector is not new. But the emergence of comprehensive, easy-to-deploy solutions will turn that promise into a reality.
It's hard to overstate the effect this will have—especially as adoption increases, and systems integrators and technology companies begin to develop the retail AI ecosystem in earnest. Expect to see more complex computing workloads, multi-architecture applications, and new benchmarks for operational efficiency and consumer experience.
This is why Li talks in terms of the "transformation of the global retail market."
"AI helps retailers provide consumers with more personalized services, accelerates business operations and commodity circulation, and delivers more valuable data insights," he says. "It will allow retailers to reshape the relationship between people, products, and markets."

Edge AI

There is a paradox at the heart of the digital transformation of retail. On the one hand, AI offers retail businesses some undeniably attractive capabilities. Computer vision product recognition enables self-service checkout, automated restocking, and loss prevention solutions. Behavior recognition allows companies to create personalized shopping experiences for their customers. And behind the scenes, automated data analysis means streamlined operations and better supply chain management.
But on the other hand, many businesses are still wary of AI solutions—even though they recognize the potential benefits. " There are several reasons why retailers are hesitant to adopt AI solutions, but the biggest factors by far are the lack of in-house technical skills needed to implement them—as well as plain old fear of the unknown," says Liangyan Li, Head of Global Sales at Hanshow, a solution provider of digital store solutions for the retail sector.
There is justification for such concerns, because implementing AI in a retail setting entails significant technological hurdles. To begin with, it means building a high-performance system that can process vast amounts of data in real time. In addition, there is an innate complexity to retail automation, which usually involves multiple technologies and computing workloads. And finally, there is an element of IT overhead as well: the ongoing need to monitor and maintain a solution after deployment to ensure stability.
The good news for retailers—and for retail systems integrators—is that a new era of ready-to-deploy edge AI solutions has already begun. Built atop next-generation processers, and using software tools designed for edge computing, these solutions offer simple, effective implementations to would-be adopters.
Edge AI Solutions Engineered for Retail
What is the key to building solutions that meet the needs of retail businesses? The combination of industry-specific AI know-how and enterprise-tier technologies designed for ease of deployment and performance at the edge.
Hanshow's hardware and software technology stack, combined with its experience in developing AI applications for retail, enable a flexible, user-friendly solution—and one that addresses the traditional concerns of business decision-makers in the sector. Here, Li credits Intel with helping to bring Hanshow's solution to market.
"Intel is unmatched as a platform for stable, reliable edge computing—particularly when attempting to develop a comprehensive, seamless solution for the end user," says Li.
Hanshow's Solution Incorporates a Number of Different Intel Technologies:
• Intel® Core™ Processors handle heavy edge workloads and image processing tasks
• Intel® Media SDK gives developers access to media workflows and video processing technologies—shortening time to market
• The Intel® OpenVINO™ Toolkit speeds AI application development and helps optimize visual processing algorithms
• Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services allows developers to build sophisticated AI algorithms even if they don't have machine learning experience

The Hanshow 2023 Long-Distance Running Festival Achieving a Great Success

Another Version of Me

Hayao Miyazaki once said, "I always believe that in this world, there is another version of me who is doing things that I dare not do and living the life that I want to live".
In my life, I have many hobbies, such as traveling, trying new foods, singing, and swimming. There is a time when I was addicted to online games and mobile games. I am always curious about new things and enjoy exploring them. Among all of my hobbies, basketball always holds a special place in my heart. I have a particular passion for it.
My first experience with basketball was probably from the anime series "Slam Dunk". It was the summer of my third grade in elementary school when the series was being broadcasted on TV. The show was full of passion for basketball, and I was particularly drawn to the red-haired character, Sakuragi. I would sit in front of the television every day, eagerly waiting for the next episode to air. It was during this time that the seeds of my love for basketball were planted.
Later on, when I entered junior high school, I had more and more classmates who played basketball. During lunch   classroom. It was during this time that I saw Kobe Bryant on TV. Despite the controversies he faced off the court, I was drawn to his dedication to winning and his strict demands for self-improvement on the court. His classic quote, "Have you ever seen Los Angeles at 4:00 AM?" has probably influenced many basketball enthusiasts like me. I idolized Kobe and his "Mamba Mentality" became my belief.
When I entered university, I heard about the basketball club on campus, and out of curiosity, I signed up to join. Although I was never really good at playing basketball, I was interested in the rules and organizing basketball matches. Coupled with my outgoing personality, I quickly got along with the members of the club and was eventually elected as the vice president of the basketball club. My time in the basketball club filled my entire university life, from practicing with the club members and organizing matches to keeping scores, collecting statistics, and finding sponsors. Even now, I sometimes look back on my time on the court with fond memories.

HR & Admin Dept. Liu Liping

I had thought that these memories would come to an end when I graduated from university, but to my surprise, the joy of playing basketball continued in my work. One evening in April of this year, while having dinner with my colleagues in the department, someone proposed organizing a supply chain basketball tournament. The proposal was immediately accepted by everyone, and I was given the responsibility of planning and organizing the tournament. I started working on the planning document, contacting venues, organizing participants and volunteers to sign up, and creating the tournament schedule. It was a flurry of activities. Throughout the preparation phase of the tournament, everyone was eagerly looking forward to it. They were busy forming teams, coming up with team names, and strategizing. During the tournament, everyone's conversations were centered around the basketball games. It brought everyone together. As the games began, the players quickly got into their respective zones, and each team put on an impressive display of skills. It was a fierce competition of attacking and defending, with each team trying to outdo the other. If the basketball court were a huge canvas, the arcing shots would be the most beautiful brushstrokes. The players on the court shone brightly, displaying their teamwork, accuracy in stealing the ball, and intense confrontations. Every explosive moment was worth savoring. The cheers of the spectators on the sidelines were incessant, with waves of support echoing in the air. The air was filled with the players' sweat and passion, as well as the fans' deep-rooted love and admiration.
After more than a month, the basketball tournament came to a close, leaving everyone with happiness and growth. Many people value the outcomes. But I want to embrace you for the effort and excellence that went into the process. The result is not always the most important thing; it is the value of the growth that we experience along the way. We should not always be concerned with winning or losing, but rather with the journey. We need to have the courage to ride the winds and waves, and the determination to persevere through difficulties. As long as we continue to accumulate experiences and keep moving forward, the possibilities are endless.
I like these two quotes, "Anything you want is on the other side of fear" and "Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your actions". During my journey, I met many people and experienced many things. I felt the warmth brought by different individuals and encountered lovely and kind-hearted people. The emotions generated from our encounters and familiarity made us care for each other, creating many bonds. This is the relationship between people.
Another version of me in the world must be living a different life than me. Whenever life doesn't go as planned, I always think that if I'm living this kind of life in this world, then in the next life, I'll try living like her. No matter what kind of life, you should experience it once. This time is not long, it's just a lifetime.

The earth is round, the football is round, and I'm also round. No matter where I live, Mainland, Scotland, England or Holland, football always landed on me, honestly, I have no clue why this is happening, but it seems like playing football is the best way of relaxing, and I do feel enjoying it.So, this is a story about me, about the win and losses of my football "career".
An Idiot on the Goal Line.
When I was a kid, I have no clue what football is, all I know is that lots of people chasing after a ball, trying to get the ball into a net, and there always be an idiot who standing in front of the goal line trying to block the ball from getting into the net. At that time, it was the golden age of Chinese football, I sometimes blame my parent for giving me birth that late, so I have zero memory of China getting into the World Cup and nearly winning the champion of the Asian Cup. Well, who cares, I was never a footballer back then. But accidentally, during my primary school period, I started playing football.
I was a centre-back, in your opinion, a centre-back might be tall and strong, but I was short then, well, I'm still short now, so I didn't play well, in middle school, they said I won't be in the first line-up anymore. If you played football you will know, every kid is trying to play an attack role, not a defencing role, the only vacant will be the goalkeeper, the idiotic role in the team, but I wanted to play and wanted to stand on the pitch, so I became a goalie, the idiot on the goal line. I was not aware of how I would find myself in this position.
The Last Man Standing.
In 2012, the first year I played as a keeper, with permission granted by my father, I was allowed to watch the EUFA Championship final at 3 o'clock in the morning, unlike other kids, my attention was on the keepers, Neuer and Cech. I was impressed, I realize how important a keeper can be and they are not idiots, instead, they are saviours.
Four years later, I went to college, and when I heard we will have a football game between departments I was excited. I immediately signed up as a keeper, and who can imagine, I became the key player for the following four years.
In the first season, I was young and restless, I made lots of irrational mistakes and it really damaged the morale of the team, we were knocked out at the octal-final. I don't understand, I tried my best, and I still can not bring victory to the team.
I didn't get the meaning of "the last man standing", I thought that phrase means someone who can save the team on their own. I was wrong.
Before the second season, the captain came to me and told me, it is not important for a keeper to deny every ball flying towards the goal, it is more about bringing confidence to the team, and letting them know that there is someone behind, supporting them and occasionally perform some miracle. But making miracles is never the most important thing, but not making mistakes. Cool, I nodded. The season was great, in the quarter-final, I denied 4 goals during the penalty kick phase, and in the semi-final, I denied 2. Indeed, some miracles did happen, but you can not expect the miracle to happen all the time. In the final, we lost, again, I couldn't save the team.
Until I graduate, I never win a championship, it might become something I will never have. But luckily, it came.

Sales System-Europe Region Zhao Haochen

Roundly me

King in the North.
When I moved to Scotland, I thought I should give up on playing football since I'm a bit terrible, so I signed up for the referee course at Scottish FA, and then I became a referee.
My Scottish lads started to call me Chuck since I always chuck the ball into our own net. Well, yes, playing with those lads really improved my skill as a keeper, I have to admit that they are on a totally different level compared to the player I played before.
This April, my friends in Glasgow asked me if I can join their team for a Scottish-Chinese football championship in Edinburgh, I will never miss a chance to win a championship! I told myself, I'm not a saviour, all I need to do is to try my best and make every decision rationally, just like what a referee will do. I tried, and I did.
It was a miracle, at least it was to me, we won. It is nothing more cheerful like to fulfil your own dream.
In the End
Eventually, I figured out why I like to be the idiot on the goal line. It is about the expectation from the teammates, the cheering from the audience, and the satisfaction of supporting a team, when they rely on you.
It is just a simple story for a goalkeeper, who finally made his dream come true.

However, it must be said that commercial coffee is a product of its time and a necessary factor in the rise of coffee. With the rise and promotion of commercial coffee, various specialty coffee shops are now found in every nook and cranny. Early specialty coffee shop owners also often started with commercial coffee. With the advent of specialty coffee, the concept of flavor slowly became part of people's lives. Gradually, some people began to understand that not all coffee is bitter but rather has different flavors. Coffee made from different coffee beans with varying degrees of roasting also brings people many different tastes. For example, coffee made from dark roasted beans often presents a chocolatey sweetness in a latte, while coffee made from lightly roasted beans often features various fruity flavors and a refreshing sweetness.
Speaking of flavors, I have to mention the pour-over coffee, which is currently one of my favorite ways to make coffee. Pour-over coffee doesn't require a coffee machine. You can simply use filter paper to filter hot water and get coffee. The entry cost is relatively low, and in recent years, it has become a popular choice for people to taste coffee. On a leisurely afternoon, grinding coffee beans, boiling water, watching the water slowly drip through the filter paper into the cup, and then sitting by the window with a cup of coffee, is also a very comfortable scene.
Speaking of flavors, earlier we mentioned how different coffee beans and roasting degrees can produce different flavors, which is fully demonstrated in pour-over coffee. The type of coffee beans used often determines the general flavor direction, and the roaster can achieve a rough flavor profile by roasting the beans to different degrees based on their understanding of the beans. For example, good coffee beans roasted lightly often present floral and fruity flavors and usually have a fruity acidity. Medium-roasted beans are usually more balanced and have a sweeter taste, while dark-roasted beans often have a chocolate flavor and a slightly bitter aftertaste. In addition, different beans can produce different flavors, which tend to become more consistent as the roasting degree increases. For example, the flavor differences between lightly roasted beans are the greatest, followed by medium roasted beans, while dark roasted beans have lower flavor differences. Extremely dark roasted beans tend to be more consistent in flavor. Therefore, among hand-dripped coffee, light-roasted coffee is the most popular, because it can experience a wider range of flavors.
The flavor of pour-over coffee is quite mystical. When we buy coffee beans, the seller often labels various flavors, such as citrus, blueberry, cherry, and so on. However, most people cannot taste these flavors, which is normal. After all, coffee beans are just coffee beans and not real blueberries, citrus, or cherries. How do these flavors come about? They are imagined by the coffee roaster during cupping, which is the process of tasting the coffee after roasting to evaluate its flavor. The purpose of these flavor descriptions is to help buyers imagine what kind of coffee they are purchasing. In other words, these flavors are subjective and most people who have not undergone professional taste training may not be able to accurately detect them. As consumers, we don't need to be too concerned about these flavor descriptions. We just need to know whether the coffee tastes good or not. If it tastes good, then it's worth drinking, regardless of the flavor description. Conversely, if it doesn't taste good, then the flavor description is meaningless, no matter how good it sounds.
Some colleagues may ask, what is the purpose of these flavor descriptions? As mentioned earlier, coffee roasted to different degrees produces different flavors. Flavor descriptions can help buyers determine whether a coffee is the style they like. Without them, all coffees would just be labeled as "coffee", and people would have no way of distinguishing and choosing. Therefore, flavor descriptions are important for helping buyers make informed purchasing decisions.
Many variables affect the flavor of pour-over coffee, in addition to the coffee beans themselves and their roasting degree. Factors such as different types of water, varying water temperatures, different types of filters, different coarseness of coffee grounds, various pour-over techniques, and different brewing times can all impact the flavor. While some of these variables may produce undesirable flavors, the combination of many variables allows us to experience a wide range of flavors. It can even be said that no two cups of coffee taste the same, which is part of the allure of hand-brewed coffee.
Coffee is indeed a very complex topic, and there's so much to cover. The description I provided is based on my personal experience and may not be completely accurate, but it's why I enjoy coffee and I wanted to share it with everyone. Thank you to my colleagues who have read this far. Finally, if you also love coffee, feel free to reach out to me anytime to chat.

Fun of Coffee

I love coffee, and I believe many of my colleagues who know me are aware of it. I also know that many of my colleagues like coffee too. Today, let's chat about why coffee is beloved by people.
People may love coffee for its effects, or perhaps because they have experienced the joy that coffee brings. What are the joys of coffee? In my opinion, the joy of coffee mainly comes from two aspects. One part comes from enjoying the process of making coffee, and the other part comes from the different sensations that come from various flavors.
Let's talk about the process of making coffee first. I don't know if you have the same feeling, but after a few days of work, feeling fulfilled yet busy, you may want to relax on the weekend. Some people choose to hang out with two or three friends, some go out for a big meal, and others immerse themselves in their hobbies and do things they love. These are all ways to relax. However, my most common way of starting the weekend often comes from a cup of coffee. It's not because of the need for caffeine, but rather a habit of enjoying the process of making coffee and savoring it.
Grinding the beans, washing the cups, and making the coffee, step by step, I enjoy the peace and relaxation that the process of making coffee brings me, as I focus on the task at hand. This focus, peace, and relaxation all fit perfectly with the weekend. After enjoying the process of making coffee, drinking a delicious cup of coffee is the natural next step.
There are many styles of coffee, such as Italian, American, French Press, and Syphon, etc. Personally, I usually make latte and pour-over coffee.
Latte is a well-known coffee beverage that combines Italian espresso and frothed milk. When people talk about coffee, a latte is often the first thing that comes to mind. Most coffee shops offer a variety of latte options, and Starbucks is undoubtedly the most well-known among them. Speaking of Starbucks, the pure latte of Starbucks is quite bitter. Along with instant pure coffee, it has led many people to have the inherent impression that coffee is bitter. The best coffee shouldn't taste bitter because most coffee is not bitter itself, and the milk provides a high level of sweetness. When combined, they produce many different flavors and provide people with a wide range of experiences.
Then why do people universally think that coffee is bitter? It's due to the inherent impression created by some commercial coffee. Commercial coffee is often made with cheap coffee beans to reduce costs and improve consistency in coffee production. The beans are excessively roasted, resulting in a burnt flavor and a lot of bitterness. Meanwhile, many baristas fail to control the temperature when frothing milk, causing the milk to lose its sweetness and resulting in a bitter latte. As a result, sugar syrup is often added to balance the flavor. You may have tried vanilla latte or hazelnut latte, which are lattes flavored with vanilla or hazelnut syrup. Although the flavor is improved by adding syrup, it's not a healthy choice.

Basketball - the Color of My Life

SCM Dept. Shen Yinlong

Throughout our lives, we develop a love for various interesting and novel things. However, as time goes by, our intense interests slowly fade away. But there are always some things that become an indispensable part of our lives. For me, that thing is basketball. I feel fortunate that I fell in love with it. It accompanies me during happy and sad times and has become an integral part of my life. Whether it's a sunny or a rainy day, working hard and laughing to the fullest, this is my youth! And basketball is the essential color in my life!
The first time I heard about the NBA was on the night before my freshman year of high school. Because the school was far from home, I stayed in a dormitory. After the lights went out, everyone was curious about the new environment and new friends, and we chatted away. As we talked, some of my roommates were still full of energy. "Stephen Curry of the Warriors is amazing, not inferior to LeBron James". "I'm good at playing basketball too. Among peers, my three-pointers are top-notch". "I think you're still a beginner, don't brag. Let's go to the basketball court tomorrow and see who's good". This was the first time I heard about the NBA and the beginning of my true connection with basketball.
The Cavaliers won the championship in 2016, and I have been keeping that poster by my bed. Even though I lost the first basketball game in my high school's tournament in my freshman year, my love for basketball was already evident.
Until now, it is still fresh in my memory that one afternoon during my sophomore year, I went to the basketball court with my classmates as usual for our physical education class. During a rebounding contest, Accidentally bumped into the center's thigh, it hit my arm and caused a fracture. The teacher called my dad to come to school. In my memory, this was the first time he carried me since I was a child. He didn't criticize me or blame me for playing basketball instead of studying for exams. He just said, "You should avoid intense exercise for the next two months. I'll pick you up tonight". Fatherly love may not be as passionate as motherly love, but it is as majestic as a mountain. None of these things have ever stopped my love for basketball, even during my stressful senior year. If you have a passion, go for it. Do everything you want and can do. You gotta have a try. Do not leave any regrets. After all, we only have a limited amount of youth!
After entering college, I had more free time, especially during my freshman year, when I could be found on the basketball court almost every day. "Look, that guy playing basketball is quite handsome". Whenever I heard this, I couldn't help but make a stylish jump shot. Who knows, maybe they were talking about me, and I might get lucky and find a date.
Playing basketball during my school days is an unforgettable period of my life. It was filled with happiness and joy, as well as frustration and worries. Now that I am working, playing basketball is a luxury thing, fortunately, there are like-minded friends in my company who organize a basketball game every week. Although I am still small and skinny, and not as energetic as before, my love for basketball remains unchanged. When I strive for victory on the court, all the happiness and unresolved grievances combine to form the memories of my youth. Perhaps, even when I am old and gray, I will still hold a basketball and go to the court, even if I cannot play anymore. My love for basketball will always be strong, and it is an essential part of my life!

Badminton Journey:
The Joy and Growth Accompanying Sports

Not long after joining Hanshow, I heard that there are various activity groups available, including badminton, which happens to be my favorite sport and has been a part of my life for over a decade. I was thrilled and excited to learn that there was a badminton group. However, I realized that the group meets on Friday evenings, which made me a little disappointed because I already have a routine three-hour badminton session at an club on Saturdays. Having two consecutive days of high-intensity aerobic exercise forced me to choose between the two activities.
Speaking of badminton, I first encountered this sport in the autumn of 2006 during the National Day holiday. I remember being brought to a badminton club activity by a friend. Before that, my knowledge of this sport was limited to watching national team athletes such as Ji Xinpeng and Zhang Ning win Olympic gold medals on television. I knew nothing about the various techniques involved. Like many beginners, I struggled with receiving and hitting the shuttlecock, as well as footwork. I always believe that athletic ability is innate, and I have never doubted that I possess this talent. As it turned out, I quickly progressed from being a novice player in a corner of the club to playing on the center court. This sport has been a part of my life ever since, and I have played in various badminton clubs and explored numerous small and large venues throughout Beijing. Along the way, I have made many like-minded friends who have not only become teammates on the court but also close companions in my daily life, providing mutual support and encouragement. Of course, many amusing incidents have occurred during our games, making them unforgettable.

Overcoming Adversity: Brother Fangger's Epiphan
In the team, it is common for people to be given nicknames, and “Brother Fangger" is one of them. This person's playing style is characterized by outstanding skills in all aspects except for the high clear shot, which they struggle with due to a severe limp. Some female players are even better than him in this particular skill (as the performance gap between men and women in the same sport can be significant). As a result, everyone has developed a strategy when playing against him, which is to keep hitting high clears to limit him within a small area on the backcourt, preventing him from moving outside of the singles and doubles sidelines. Thus, the nickname "Brother Fangger" was born. By executing this tactic, they would win half of the point almost every time, which made it a tried-and-true strategy. However, after struggling for a considerable amount of time, "Brother Fangger" suddenly transformed. It was not through improving their technique but rather by changing their tactics that they were able to break free from their limitations and achieve victories. This once again confirms the principle that "reaching the limit leads to change; change leads to solution". Life is similar to sports. It is not always smooth sailing, but with hard work, one can reap rewards.
Retreating to the Mountains and Forests - The Decline of the Top-Ranked Nirvana in Fire
The "Top-ranked Nirvana in Fire" is the nickname of a big brother in the team who is nearing his fifties. Perhaps due to regular exercise, his appearance and physical condition make him look like he is around 35 years old. This big brother is energetic on the court and has excellent skills in badminton. He could cover three-quarters of the court in doubles and was once recognized as the team's Top-ranked Nirvana in Fire, unbeatable. The words "fatigue" and "rest" seem to be nonexistent in his dictionary as he often plays continuously without taking any breaks. However, due to his lack of warm-up exercises before the game and stretching exercises after playing, his calf meniscus could no longer withstand the strain, and he eventually had to undergo surgery. After the operation, he could not exercise without any reaction, but as soon as he started to exercise, he could not bear the pain. After several attempts to return, he made the tough decision to stop playing badminton altogether, which was regrettable. From him, I learned that we must exercise moderation in everything we do, even in healthy sports, otherwise, it could be counterproductive.
Comeback Against the Wind - The Stubbornness of "Holding One's Breath"
"Holding My Breath" is a member of the team, a young lady who played a crucial role in a group match against an external team. With both teams having won two matches each in the first four games, the fifth and final match was a mixed doubles showdown, a decisive match. This young lady shone brightly when she stepped onto the court. As anyone who has played amateur mixed doubles knows, the key to success lies on the female player's level and performance. However, this young lady's skills and abilities were weaker than her opponent's, yet her strong mental resilience and perseverance led her to achieve a final victory, despite the ups and downs and the nerve-wracking atmosphere. After the match, her memorable words were, "As long as I hold my breath, I will persist for one more shot. The next shot might cause them to make a mistake, which would give us a chance to win". Subsequently, she changed her name in the WeChat Group to "Holding My Breath".
There have been many such people and events around me over the years. Looking back on my journey with badminton, I deeply appreciate everything this sport has given me. It accompanied me through my youth, causing me to experience a mix of love and hate that was difficult to let go of, like an old friend, confidant, or even partner. It witnessed the ups and downs of my life when I was young and struggling to make it on my own, experiencing the bitterness, sweetness, joys, and sorrows of life. At the moment of striking the shuttlecock, I can seemingly throw away all worries and stress, enjoying the pleasure of sports. In addition to bringing me health, it also taught me perseverance, unity, and effort, allowing me to grow and succeed through challenges and learn the importance of teamwork. Fortunately, I have not suffered any significant sports injuries over the years, and I hope that I can continue to persevere and enjoy this happy sport even at the age of 70 (the oldest member of the team).

What qualities and physical fitness are required to complete an Ironman competition? With a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike ride, and 21 km running in 44-degree heat during the May Day holiday, I was fortunate enough to participate in and complete the Xiangang Ironman competition in Vietnam, achieving sixth place in my age group.
About Preparations: For this competition, I made sufficient preparations, ensuring 8 hours of sleep per day, 2 hours of training, a healthy diet plan, and long-distance high-intensity training on the weekends. During the training period, I constantly searched for my shortcomings and strengthened them. When facing difficulties, I continuously sought advice from experienced people to find solutions. Finally, when encountering a low point, it is crucial to have full confidence in oneself. In many cases, willpower is an important part of high-level competition.
1.9 km Swimming: On my fourth Ironman competition, I still primarily use the breaststroke swimming technique, and I found it to be very energy-consuming as I am not yet proficient in the freestyle technique. During my first open-water swim, I was quite scared of the large waves in the sea! When standing on the beach, it is impossible to swim out until a wave passes over you above your waist and you can take advantage of the wave's momentum to swim out. Otherwise, you will be pushed back by the waves. When swimming in the middle of the sea, I discovered the true meaning of waves. There are no shore-breaking waves, but rather more of a rolling wave. To swim smoothly, you need to dive deep into the water when a big wave comes. Swimming in the vast ocean makes you feel small. After swallowing some seawater, I finally made it to the shore with a time of 58 minutes.
90 km Bike ride: I noticed that a quarter of the bike riders had already set off by the time I arrived on shore. Since I did not bring my bike, I rented one, and I also did not have bike lock shoes, which greatly affected my performance. The Vietnam course had more flat roads, and my advantage of being good at climbing hills as a Miaofengshan Excellent Climber was not utilized. I gradually caught up with the disadvantage of swimming through intense chasing, but another problem arose because the rental bike could only hold one water bottle. With the scorching heat approaching 40 degrees, my previous experience of completing a 113 km Ironman race taught me that replenishment is more important than participating in the competition. I carried four bottles of water, one in each hand, and even one in my chest pocket, so that I could quickly replenish myself and maintain my competitive status while rapidly losing sweat. At this moment, I deeply understood the importance of the saying that "Before the troops move, fodder and provisions go first" from ancient times. As the last 10 km of the bike ride did not have ideal replenishment, I reduced my water intake. As a result, I started to feel dizzy and struggled to move forward. However, after seeing the replenishment station at the last 5 km, I frantically replenished my water and started sprinting toward the end of the bike ride. Finally, I completed the 90 km bike ride in three hours and began preparing for the run! Get ready to run!

21 km Running: It was now 11 am, and the temperature was approaching 44 degrees. I changed out of my Ironman outfit and put on my running clothes. When I first started running, I was a bit excited, but my experience of hitting the wall during a marathon taught me that the more you want to exert yourself, the more you should conserve energy. As the ancient Chinese saying goes, "A hidden dragon is better than a used one". If you exert yourself too early, you may regret it later. I ran the first 5 km at a pace of 7 minutes per kilometer, and then I began to feel something strange in my body, such as numbness in my fingers. At that point, I slowed down my pace since I saw ambulances rushing to rescue unconscious participants along the way. Being in a foreign country, I did not want to take any risks challenging the Vietnamese medical system. Instead, I slowed down my pace and enjoyed the race comfortably. Along the way, I saw many disabled people participating in the race, including blind runners with guide runners and athletes with congenital malformations, such as those born with only one arm but with a hand. This moment deeply shocked me and reminded me of a college elective course that talked about how the United States extensively used biological weapons during the Vietnam War, contaminating Vietnam's water resources and causing many Vietnamese people to be born with disabilities. Seeing the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese Ironmen, I also hope that the world can stop having wars that destroy the happy lives of people who love peace. I finished the last ten kilometers at 7 minutes per-kilometer pace. However, my hands were still numb. After the race, I asked a seasoned Ironman and found out that this was due to the temperature difference caused by quickly cooling down with cold water, causing my hands to become numb. The best solution at this point is to move forward slowly. I did not understand the scientific principles behind it, but I knew that the ultimate goal of each enthusiast was to complete the race safely. The finish line of the race is home, and it is better to train day and night than risk your life on the racecourse. Finally, I completed the running part of the Ironman competition in 2 hours and 40 minutes at a steady pace of 7 minutes per kilometer.
Crossing the finish line of the Ironman competition in 7 hours and 50 minutes did not bring excitement or a sense of triumph. The level of endurance required for such an event cannot be adequately described in words, and for a moment, the thought of never participating in such a sport again crossed my mind. However, after taking the time to rest and recover, recalling the various moments from the race reignited my passion, and I am eager to push myself to new heights. After this race, I hope to participate in an even more challenging Ironman competition, the 226 km race. I understand that difficulties are only temporary. Since I have chosen to pursue this path, I am not afraid of facing challenges head-on. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues for reading this story to the end and my company for providing an excellent fitness environment. I hope to work diligently with the determined and hardworking people of Hanshuo who share a passion for sports, both in the workplace and on the sports field, sweating and striving towards our goals together!

My Healing Journey with Cats and Dogs

Strategy & Marketing Dept. Song Biyan

When you feel tired and upset, will you be healed by a puppy's smile or a cat rub against you? Today, I would love to share my story of mutual healing and help with dogs and cats. I have a 3-year-old Bichon Frise and a 1-year-old Golden Chinchilla cat, and have actively participated in many rescue actions for dogs and cats in both Chengdu and New York.
Since childhood, I have always loved dogs and have always wanted to have my own puppy. However, I never had the opportunity to raise one since I was living on campus and my parents were unwilling to get into troubles. It was not until 2020, when I returned to China due to the pandemic and felt depressed, that a friend took me to a pet store to choose a lively puppy. The arrival of the puppy made my life full of surprises and busyness. Taking care of the new life from morning till night every day made me feel like a mother.
Watching the puppy gradually adapt to the new environment, enjoy her food happily, and slowly accumulate trust in me, also made my mood better and better. Instead of being low all day, I started thinking about how to bring more happiness to the puppy and myself.
Starting from my puppy, I began to pay attention to her movements, eyes, and barks, and what she was trying to express. After establishing a bit of understanding with her, I began to observe the dogs I met while walking on the street, to observe their social behaviors, and to understand their ways of life. My observations and learning progressed from dogs kept at home to stray dogs. I saw the homeless dogs struggling to survive on the streets.
Also, I saw various reports and posts describing their harsh and disrespectful living conditions. I really hope that I can assisting in creating a better living environment for at least some of the dogs and cats in need.
Therefore, I began to pay attention to animal rescue organizations in Chengdu and actively looked for volunteer opportunities. I used my language skills to help translate for adoption activities and promote communication between Chinese and foreign friends, as well as helped screen adopters. After that, I went back to the United States to continue my offline studies. I observed the different approaches taken by the US and China towards pets and stray animals, and explored which aspects could be learned from. I found that there were almost no stray animals on the streets in the US. Pet owners are required to have chips, and there are dedicated lawns for dogs to play and free pickup bags. Dog owners consciously maintain a friendly and clean environment and prevent pets from bothering strangers.
In addition to keeping pets at home, I also paid attention to animal rescue organizations. Because it is difficult to bring pets back to China from the United States, I chose to help some stray cats fostered by the rescue organizations instead of adopting them. I have fostered a total of 8 stray cats. These experiences have made my life colorful. From the hardship of feeding and defecating every three hours to the sense of accomplishment of seeing the kittens open their eyes, from hiding completely to gradually daring to come out to see people, from being too scared to move to actively sticking to me, I witnessed many beautiful moments from them.
These experiences have also enriched my life and made me more aware of my responsibility and love for pets. I know that pets are our friends and family members who need our careful care and attention. I hope that you who read this can also realize the importance and value of dogs and cats, and let us work together to protect and respect them and build a better home.
